This painting is a fine example of Kunkler’s small oeuvre, mainly constituted of landscape and genre scene such as the repent one, and mostly owned by private collectors

Jean-Jules Adrien Kunkler (born 1829 in Morges , canton of Vaud , † December 26, 1866 in Geneva ) was a Swiss genre and landscape painter of the Düsseldorf School .

Kunkler, son of a family from St. Gallen , began his training as a painter in Geneva under Jean-Léonard Lugardon (1801-1884) and the landscape painter Jean Charles Ferdinand Humbert (1813-1881). In 1850 he took - together with his friend Benjamin Vautier - a study at the Dusseldorf Art Academy in which he finished 1,852th At the Dusseldorf Academy, where his friend Alfred Dumont followed in 1852 , Karl Ferdinand Sohn was his most important teacher. From 1850 to 1854 he was a member of the artist association Malkasten . In 1854 he returned to Geneva, where he received his pictureSale of favorite sheep exhibited. Subsequently, Kunkler undertook trips to Savoy , to Provence and to Spain , where he stayed in Palma in 1855 ( Balearic Islands ) and Barcelona . In 1858 he returned from these trips back to Geneva. In October 1862 he married. During the last years of his life he lived with his family summer at Schloss Ostier at the foot of the Voiron.
