'Fofana' Shell Chest Ornament, Papua New Guinea

Known as 'Fofona', they were woven by women & given to young men after their initiation. They were worn on the chest and also held in between teeth during battle. Lastly, they served as bride price in marriage transactions. The shells had great value, once traded all over the world as currency.
